Shrewsbury Media Connection Wins Overall Excellence Award

Shrewsbury Media Connection has won a Hometown Video Award for Overall Excellence in P.E.G. Access (for budget under $200,000.)

The SMC Staff submitted documentation and a 30 minute video and compiling the best of Public, Educational & Government programming produced this past year for the contest. The competition was fierce!

In 1997 SMC was a finalist in the Public Access category. SMC producer Monica Mansfield is no stranger to the Hometown Video Awards as she has won several over the years for her show Mostly Rock 'n' Roll.

If you go to the Alliance for Community Media website – Hometown Video Festival (http://www.alliancecm.org/index.php?page_id=184) you will see more on this.

Thanks to all of you who worked so hard this past year to make SMC the best. All of the programming that's on SPAC-TV33, SETV-34 and SGTV-35 contributed to our winning the Hometown Video Award for Overall Excellence in P.E.G. Access this year. Congratulations to all of our community producers!

Shrewsbury Electric (SELCO), a town-owned and operated electric utility, established Shrewsbury Cable as the cable department in 1983. As part of the cable franchise, SELCO provides Public, Educational and Governmental (PEG) Access through Shrewsbury Media Connection (formerly Shrewsbury Public Access Connection - SPAC) by a staff dedicated to community programming. A portion of cable revenue provides funding for PEG access.

SMC is responsible for the administration of SPAC Channel 33 for PUBLIC ACCESS, SETV Channel 34 for EDUCATIONAL ACCESS, and SGTV Channel 35 for GOVERNMENTAL ACCESS. All PEG access programming is available exclusively through Shrewsbury Community Cablevision.

Public access programming is produced or sponsored by a Shrewsbury resident or person working in Shrewsbury on a non-discriminatory first-come, first-served basis. The programming on SPAC Channel 33 reflects the community of Shrewsbury on a broad range of topics including shows for all ages such as activism, politics, religion, sports, and community events. Public access enables ordinary citizens to exercise their First Amendment

right to free speech on television.

In October of 1996, Shrewsbury Educational Television, Shrewsbury Media Connection (SMC) and the Education Television Studio (ETS) at Shrewsbury High School partnered to create a separate access channel dedicated to educational access. The programming on SETV Channel 34 is targeted to the community at large to meet the educational and informational needs of the residents of the town of Shrewsbury.

In February of 2002, a separate access channel dedicated to governmental access was opened on SGTV 35. Governmental Access gives a media voice to municipal government and provides citizens with a window into the workings of our municipal (and, from time to time, state and federal) government. All meetings televised are Gavel-to-gavel.

SMC's Mission: To build community, empower the individual and, ensure First Amendment expression through the utilization of communication technologies.
