Summer Reading MAY 2005 |
![]() |
Dear Families,
During the summer months, it is important that children read daily to keep up
their skills. Studies have shown that students who read during the summer can
actually improve their reading. It is important that students are encouraged
to read and understand books that match their level of comprehension. Reading
books above their level will only increase frustration. This year the Summer
Reading Committee has revamped the program and listed the required books by
reading level (challenging, average, easy). We also listed a variety of books
of different genre in order to meet children’s preferences. Please note,
students entering kindergarten and grade 1 may not be able to read the books
themselves in this case we encourage you to read the books to or with your child.
The school year will begin with activities and discussions related to the theme
of the required summer reading book. In addition to the required read, students
are asked to read additional books from a choice list and complete an activity
(except in grades K-2). The goal of the summer reading program is to foster
a love of reading.
When children struggle with reading, modifications should be implemented to
set them up for success. Please contact Patty
Lambert if you have any questions.
The lists below are designed for incoming students. There is a parent sign-off sheet for students in grades K - 4. There are required activity sheets for students to complete starting in grade three. Please refer to the table below to access the appropriate list and activity for your child. The high school list will be available to you soon!
Best wishes for an enjoyable summer!
