Special Needs Program

 Eligibility for Program Participation

The Parks and Recreation Department Special Needs Programs are suggested for persons age 8* and up. Parents should contact the department as to the suitability of the program for their child.

*age prerequisites vary by program.

 
 Recreational and Social Services
Dances, parties, and "get-togethers" are organized throughout the year. Specific dates and information are available by contacting the office.

 Volunteers and Parents

Leadership and supervision in all activities is provided by volunteer staff under the guidance of the program director. Students' parents are often needed for participation on unified teams. Anyone wishing to help should inform the program director.

 
 Special Olympics Competition
"Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt."

Participants practice locally and compete state-wide in a variety of sports (see listing). Coaching and instruction is provided by adults with experience suited to the particular sport.

Registration and a completed medical form are needed to compete in Special Olympics competitions.

 Highlights From Special Olympics

Shrewsbury Special Needs Participants Named "Family of the Year" by Special Olympics Massachusetts

The Special Olympics Massachusetts has named Colin and Ginny Davidson Family of the year by presenting them with the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Family Award for 2004.

Colin and Ginny are both active in the local Shrewsbury Special Needs Program and participate at the state level as well. Colin is a Global Messenger and gives speeches around the state helping to promote the benefits of Special Olympics. He is also a year round athlete participating in soccer, basketball, track, and golf.

Ginny served as the Families director for the winter games held in March in the City of Worcester. She also participates in Special Olympics as a partner for bocce. The Davidson's were nominated for this award by George Kent, Central Section Director for Special Olympics Massachusetts.
