Donahue Rowing Center
History of the Donahue Rowing Center
The Donahue Rowing Center Opened in 1992 as a center for rowing activities.
It is located at the north end of Lake Quinsigamond in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts.
The center was constructed with a combination of a grant from the Massachusetts
Office of Environmental Affairs and private contributions, most notable
of which was that of the Irving James Donahue, Jr. family for approximately
20 percent of the $1.1 million project cost. In 2002 the center was expanded
by 4 bays thanks to a generous donation from the Donahue family and the
cooperation of the Alumni Association.
The center serves area high school and college crew programs as well
as the recreational rower. Presently, there are five school programs that
call the DRC home, utilizing its boat storage bays and training facilities.
A number of singles rowers rent individual rack space and row out of the
center on a regular basis, while others participate using shells owned
by the Quinsigamond Rowing Association, a nonprofit rowing interest group
dedicated to the support of area rowing. QRA/DRC rower Christine Collins
brought home a bronze medal from the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.
The DRC is owned and operated by the Town of Shrewsbury Parks and Recreation
Department as a self-sustaining activity, under the general direction
and supervision of the Town Manager, the DRC
Boathouse Advisory Committee to the Parks & Recreation Commission,
shall formulate operational guidelines (building access and schedules,
rules, staff responsibilities, maintenance requirements). Revenues are
derived primarily from the rental of boat racks and secondary income from
rental of the "Quarterdeck" club room for private parties and
functions.
How to OBTAIN A RACK RENTAL
Rack Rentals for Single Scullers: The annual rate for rental of a single
rack during the 2002 rental year is $400. The rental period runs from
July 1 to June 30. Short-term rentals (less than a full year), if and
when available, are charged $60 monthly. Rental fees for the full rental
period are due prior to occupancy. Rates are reviewed annually, and prospective
renters should inquire for 2003/2004 rental rates.
Rack renters receive a card ($5 charge) for electronic access to the
boat bay as well as to the clubhouse with its dressing, shower and locker
facilities. All rowers are expected to do their part in keeping the facilities
clean, orderly and secure.
Boat owners may obtain information and rental applications from the Parks
and Recreation office at Shrewsbury Town Hall, (508) 841-8503.
