Highway Department

Overview

John Knipe
Superintendent Highway Department

The task of maintaining many miles of public and private streets is carried out by the Highway Department, which consists of a Superintendent, one Motor Equipment Repair Foreman, two Mechanics, one Foreman, six Equipment Operators and two Clerks. Some responsibilities of the Highway Department include maintenance of town equipment, roads, traffic lines, installation of traffic and street signs, brush control along roadways, snow and ice control, resurfacing, and sealing of streets.

Residents, who operate vehicles on town roads, rely on the Highway Department to keep them moving. The department maintains more than 162 miles of roadway, along with 100 or more miles of sidewalk. Roadways must be repaired, cleaned and stripped for safe driving. In appropriate seasons snow is cleared from the roadways. In addition, catch basins are maintained as well as storm water drains.

The Highway department also assists in removing town owned trees that have fallen in severe weather, clears dead animals from the streets and picks up illegally disposed of debris along public ways.
