DISTRICT RANKINGS There are 210 systems containing all three grades on the list. Because each of the three subjects had a different raw point total, the Department of Education scaled the results so that each subject had a minimum of 200 points and a maximum of 280 points. Education officials say the scaled scores are the most appropriate statistics to use when making comparisons among results. By adding all nine scores, the Globe produced an overall score for each district that gives parents and students a general indication of how their school district compares with others. Officials say scores should be compared only within the same grade level and subject area because total scores could mask individual achievements or failures in particular grades and subjects.
